Project Description

As a space for discovery and encounters, the Planetarium hosts numerous events (thematic exhibitions, conferences, astronomical events, nocturnes, concerts, European Researchers’ Night, meetings with astronauts, etc.) that highlight the activities of the Space Pole Institutes (Royal Observatory of Belgium, Royal Meteorological Institute, Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy) located in Uccle.

The Planetarium is one of the oldest (inaugurated in 1935 during the Universal Exhibition) and largest (diameter of the dome: 23m / 350 seats) planetariums in Europe; as such, it is an integral part of Belgian heritage. Its national scope is recognised abroad: the Planetarium is the home of the European Space Education Resource Office (ESERO) project of the European Space Agency (ESA), the contact point of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) for the press and the coordinator of activities carried out in Belgium by the International Astronomical Union. He is involved in various European educational projects.
